To Congress:

Proposed legislation that could ban TikTok will not address the legitimate concerns lawmakers have voiced about user privacy and security. TikTok is not the only company collecting users’ sensitive data and processing or sharing that data in harmful ways. And a national ban on a social-media application would violate the free-expression rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

We call on Congress to pass federal privacy legislation like the American Data Privacy and Protection Act to protect all internet users. Lawmakers should reject bills that would ban individual websites and apps that engage in the same kinds of problematic actions that so many other platforms do.

Tell Congress: Reject the Ban on TikTok and Champion Real Federal Privacy Protections

By now, you’ve probably heard a lot of hype and panic about the social-media platform TikTok amid the rush from Congress to ban the app.

If Congress is serious about protecting our data, it needs to pass comprehensive privacy legislation like the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA), which would apply to all social-media platforms and actually protect our data across the internet.

Banning TikTok is not the solution to legitimate concerns about user-privacy and national-security issues — we need real government action on privacy. If you agree, add your name to our petition today.
