To Congress:

Section 215 of the Patriot Act is an invasive spying authority that must be reformed. We urge you to support the Safeguarding Americans’ Private Records Act, which would end the controversial Call Detail Records program, prohibit warrantless location tracking, and require an investigation into Section 215 surveillance of First Amendment-protected activities. The passage of this bill would be a major step forward in protecting people from warrantless and discriminatory government surveillance.

Urge Congress to Pass the Safeguarding Americans’ Private Records Act

Section 215 of the Patriot Act allows the U.S. government to collect incredibly sensitive information about people living in the United States, like details on our phone calls, location data, medical records and financial transactions. And much of this info can be obtained without a warrant.

But we have good news: A critical piece of legislation is moving through Congress RIGHT NOW that would add necessary reforms to Section 215 of the Patriot Act.

A coalition of senators and representatives, including Sens. Ron Wyden and Steve Daines along with Reps. Zoe Lofgren, Warren Davidson and Pramila Jayapal, has just announced the Safeguarding Americans’ Private Records Act. This bill would be a major step forward in protecting people from warrantless and discriminatory government surveillance.

This bill would put an end to one of the worst parts of Section 215, the Call Detail Records program, the NSA’s massive phone-record-collection program that Edward Snowden blew the whistle on.1 The legislation would also prohibit warrantless location tracking and require an investigation into Section 215 surveillance of First Amendment-protected activities.

Tell your senators and representative to support the Safeguarding Americans’ Private Records Act today.
