To the Members of the Media:

“Alt-right” is a term white nationalists and white supremacists use to obscure their overtly racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic and misogynist agenda. The Associated Press just released a set of standards for reporting on the so-called “alt-right” — urging reporters to “avoid using the term generically and without definition [because it] may exist primarily as a public-relations device to make its supporters’ actual beliefs less clear and more acceptable to a broader audience.”

As an organization that sets standards and norms for journalistic practices throughout the industry, the AP is taking a step in the right direction.

All media outlets need to stop using the term “alt-right” without context. Call out racism, white nationalism, neo-Nazism, white supremacy and misogyny for what they are.

Using the term “alt-right” without context helps normalize extremist groups, creating an environment where increased levels of dehumanization, harassment and violence against Muslims, people of color, women, immigrants and LGBTQI folks become daily occurrences.

People’s lives are at risk as members of the incoming Trump administration call for mass deportation of undocumented people, a ban on Muslims entering the country, and suppression of the Black vote. The media must hold the administration and white supremacist groups accountable for their actions and stop doing PR for racists.

We need journalists to remain steadfast. News outlets must name white nationalism and white supremacy when they see it — to do otherwise is to mainstream hate as it’s being invited into the White House. The AP has taken the lead and set the standard for the industry — now all news outlets need to follow suit.

Don’t do PR for racists. Call the “alt-right” what it is: white nationalism.

Tell the Media: Don't Do PR for Racists

“Alt-right” is a term white nationalists and white supremacists use to obscure their overtly racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic and misogynist agenda.

Too many media outlets are using the term without definition or context — and these omissions help normalize extremist groups and create an environment where increased levels of dehumanization, harassment and violence against Muslims, immigrants, people of color, women and LGBTQI folks become daily occurrences.

People's lives are at risk as members of the incoming Trump administration call for mass deportation of undocumented people, a ban on Muslims entering the country,1 and suppression of the Black vote.2 According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there were 701 reported incidents of hateful harassment in the 10 days following the election.3 These incidents can't be separated from Trump's hateful platform or the agenda of the so-called “alt-right.”4

The Associated Press is now urging the media to stop using the term "alt-right" without definition or context.5 The media must hold the administration and white supremacist groups accountable for their actions and stop doing PR for racists.
