Tell Congress to Create an Emergency Journalism-Stimulus Fund

To Members of Congress:

Local, relevant, timely and reliable news and information are critical for our communities’ safety, health and survival during and beyond the coronavirus pandemic. But local newspapers and media outlets are beyond a crisis point. Without immediate help, they could go extinct.

Congress should direct a minimum of $5 billion into an emergency journalism-stimulus fund to address this crisis.

This funding should:

Double support for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to fund education and newsgathering
Direct emergency support to keep journalists working in local and community newsrooms
Create a “First Amendment Fund” to offer grants and support to local journalists, especially those working to serve communities of color and other communities that mainstream outlets often ignore or misrepresent

We are the middle of a global health emergency and we need journalists on the ground to keep us safe and healthy. This is especially critical in communities of color and immigrant communities, which mainstream outlets too often ignore or misrepresent.

Free Press Action is calling on Congress to spend $5 billion to confront this crisis. Our plan includes proposals to double federal support for public media, fund newsroom jobs to keep local reporters working, and cover communities that mainstream outlets have ignored or misrepresented.
