FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn will soon end her tenure at the agency, bringing a close to nine incredible years of fearless advocacy. We couldn't have asked for a better partner in protecting your rights to connect and communicate.
Mignon Clyburn's tenure has been marked by her unwavering commitment to the voices that too often go unheard: children, low-income families, incarcerated people, immigrants and communities of color.
Just a few of her achievements:
- Appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, becoming the first Black woman to serve on the FCC
- Designated interim chair in 2013, becoming the first woman to lead the agency
- Led push to limit the exorbitant costs of prison-phone calls, citing "2.7 million children in this country with at least one incarcerated parent." Won a historic vote at the FCC in 2015.
- Voted alongside fellow Democratic Commissioners Tom Wheeler and Jessica Rosenworcel in 2015 to adopt the historic Net Neutrality rules
- Led the 2016 effort to subsidize broadband access via the Lifeline program to help close the digital divide and support millions of people struggling to get by
- Delivered an impassioned dissent against the 2017 vote repealing the Net Neutrality protections
