To Meta, Twitter and YouTube:

Social-media platforms must consider the year-round vulnerabilities that allow election-specific content to mislead and polarize voters.

You have dropped or weakened crucial policies designed to protect user safety and our democracy. We urge all social-media platforms to immediately adopt the following steps before the damage is irreversible:

  • Reinvest in staffing and teams needed to safeguard election integrity, trust and safety, and moderation.
  • Reinstate disinformation policies — including those governing election and COVID disinformation — and bolster policy moderation to limit exposure to violence and lies.
  • Launch 2024 election-specific platform interventions in time for the U.S. primaries and keep them in place through at least February 2025.
  • Hold VIP accounts to the same standards as those of other users.
  • Develop more efficient review and enforcement on political-ad content across languages.
  • Develop better transparency and disclosure policies and regularly share core metrics data with researchers, journalists, lawmakers and the public.

Please take appropriate steps to protect the rights of your users and the health of our democracy as elections approach in 2024.
