    Transforming Local News

How Can Local News Reflect and Support the Gender Spectrum?

Earlier this year, the Charlotte Observer produced a five-part story called #TeamPregnantDad1. The story highlighted Liam Johns’ experience navigating pregnancy as a Transgender man in Charlotte.

It also highlighted the need for deeper conversation, representation and storytelling across the gender spectrum.

So ... let’s do it! Join us for an interactive gathering on Aug. 10 as we screen the mini-documentary from #TeamPregnantDad and talk about the future of Charlotte’s local news.

    Event details:
What: TRANSforming Local News: A Conversation on Reflecting the Gender Spectrum in Charlotte Media
When: Sat., Aug. 10, from 1–3 p.m. (doors open at 12:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served after the event)
Where: Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte, 234 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte

Organizations partnering on this event include The Charlotte Observer, Free Press, Atrium Health, Charlotte Pride, Connie J. Vetter Law, Transcend Charlotte, Essentials for Life Ministries, Freedom Center for Social Justice, PFLAG Charlotte, qnotes and Time Out Youth Center.

Participants will take part in conversations with fellow community members and with local journalists. There will also be large- and small-group discussions on how local news can tell stories across the gender spectrum while providing information that makes Charlotte expansive enough to hold us all safely.

Be there on Aug. 10 and share your perspective. Join the conversation to determine what’s needed and how we can build together.

Let’s dream and shape the future of Charlotte news.

Note: Throughout this conversation, Transgender and gender nonconforming participants will be given the option to take part in mixed-gender or gender-autonomous conversations. Tables will be marked accordingly.
